The midway point of the FM life cycle has just passed us, so if you’re looking for a new save you would probably want to see a few team reports, here you are. In this post I will be going through the Luton squad in detail. Luton are just getting back to the good times after falling to the National League in 2009 thanks to a -30 point deduction from the FA for going into debt but after getting promotion in 2014 following a 5 year absence, Luton are heading back. This season has been superb. Nathan Jones the young Welshman who we got from Brighton has been outstanding in his second full season with the club securing shocking wins like the 8-2 against Yeovil back in August, as with every club during a season you always have some flaws, our lasted around 3 months where we got 5 draws in 10 games, during this run we also saw Luke Berry get injured, a terrible one too. He suffered a dislocated left ankle and a fractured fibula (Get well soon Luke) but with us in second now confirmed after the season finished on Saturday all we can wonder is how will we do in LG1! Anyway let’s get into greater detail:
Well for League Two the Luton squad is amazing. With Jones’ attacking mind set we can score goals for fun. From last year the squad has changed significantly. With the loan signings of Andrew Shinnie and Flynn Downes to our signings of Marek Stech. Lloyd Jones, James Collins and more. Let’s start with the person in between the sticks, someone has to do it! Marek Stech has been amazing till our mini slump in the bussiness end of the season, he made save after save after save, starting with a penalty in his debut verses Yeovil sadly he hasn’t performed too well ever since therefore James Shea who we bought from AFC Wimbledon has been playing in the league and has made a massive impact. In defence we have two great center backs (pictured above), our skipper Scott Cuthbert and our Vice captain Alan Sheehan Scottish and Irish respectively. Even though they have both made mistakes during the season, as all defenders do they’ve been solid. In midfield we have four players as part of the 4-4-2 Diamond. Alan McCormack who has recently returned to the squad following an injury early on, Andrew Shinnie and Flynn Downes who are both on loan from Birmingham and Ipswich. We also have Luke Berry who playes in the attacking midfield role who we bought from league rivals Cambridge in the summer, he was a quality signing and has performed superbly scoring a perfect hat-trick against Cambridge earlier in the year. Our two strikers are Danny Hylton and James Collins. Well Danny is a superb player but does get angry very easily therefore he picks up quite a few yellows, meanwhile Collins was bought from Crawley during the summer and has been solid, assisting a lot while scoring a lot. Sometimes we play a 4-3-3 attacking which puts Elliot Lee in the mix, he was bought on a free transfer from Barnsley during the pre-season after not being able to make the break through in the Championship, he has a brother who plays for Luton called Olly Lee (who scored from another postcode vs Cambridge) and a father who you might recognise called Rob Lee ex Newcastle player.
Luton have a few youth prospects in the like of James Justin who is England U18 player, he’s a right back and has done a solid job including an amazing strike in January. Flynn Downes too who I’ve mentioned a few times, he has a big future so if you can buy him do it, I urge! We also have Lloyd Jones who is a centre back and we bought him on deadline day in January from Liverpool on a two year contract. He won’t find first team football in his first season so if you want him to rot in the reserves or play in the Checkatrade Trophy do that but I suggest loaning him out to a team in the Non-League.
On the bench:
So, hopefully KitKat will sponsor us now! Getting serious now, on the bench I suggest you have a keeper, why? Well what if one gets injured, what will you do then? James Shea is the one to go here. The signing from Wimbledon is great but Marek just pips the post here, that’s the issue with having two quality keepers. I would also use Glen Rea who can play in a number of positions. This season Nathan has used him in the CDM role replacing McCormack as he was injured but Glen can also play at centre back. I suggest you don’t do this, seriously he can’t pass so tell him to not touch the ball, you will be fine then! Jack Stacey is another young player, who we got from Reading in the summer, he has been brilliant this season but some players are not brilliant enough, if you give him time he can become an amazing player in LG1. We have Elliot Lee up next who we signed from Barnsley in the summer. If you are to play 3 up front I suggest using him instead of Jake Jervis who trust me is very tall but can’t head the ball, we bought him from my home town Plymouth on deadline day! Finally you should have Luke Gambin Maltese international who we bought for an undisclosed fee last season from relegation threatened Barnet.
- During our 5 year non-league spell not everything went wrong, in fact we went on a FA Cup run and famously knocking out Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Road which made Luton the first non league team to beat a Premier League team in the FA Cup, what a day!
- This season we are the first ever team to score 5+ 3 times or more before Christmas
- Luton’s biggest win comes way back in the day when we beat Bristol Rovers 12-0
- Adding on to the 12-0 result Joe Payne scored 10 in that game which is a Football League and club record to the day!
Can you cary on Luton’s rise?
